Online Dating: What’s out there?

There are so many dating websites and apps available, it is hard to keep count. But which one is right for you? Below is an outlined description of various online dating websites, and different services they provide.

After looking into certain dating sites, we witness the social and dominant discourses throughout the websites, and app usability. Some of the dating websites are for specific diverse groups, for example; single, mature, christian, asian, casual, or gay groups in which the website actively promotes services they can provide for. One particular online dating website, Just Say G’day appeals to wider audiences than some other dating apps/sites, as it gives option and choice to the user. This website also allows you to gamify your experience by adding profiles, avatars, and images.

Just Say G’day is such an accommodated online dating website too (as shown above), which is very appealing to anyone who is looking to sign up for a free, diverse dating service.

Another dating website, Date My Petstates it is a website for pet lovers! Whether you are looking for a life partner, a buddy for your pet or just someone to hang out with, here you’ll be able to find exactly who you are looking for – pet lovers like yourself. The website not only caters for one to find love, but also offers dating advice, online dating tips, and a pet friendly overview. All this information is available to anyone, at any adult age, through the simple, free sign up steps. The most important aspect of this website, or even any app or social media account, is privacy and safety issues involving private content and images- this dating website offers privacy, and safety checks, perfect for anyone with privacy concerns.

When using a dating app or website, the user wants to feel safe. As personal information posted online, such as your full name, date of birth, the city in which you live, or images, are such private aspects of anyone’s lives- unless this information is publicly posted on social sites for the world to see, we want to keep it behind closed doors! As having personal information out openly on the internet, allows for others to actively view and seek your profile, which can ultimately impact on our identity, and how we are perceived by peers, friends, family, or even future employers.

After all, who would want there personal information, likes and dislikes, (and embarrassing pet photos) leaked to the general public?

Unless it’s a photo like this of course…

-Thanks to Adam for letting me use his tweet, you can check Tiff out on Twitter here

This tweet, and photo was shared with consent, as no one wants personal images to be shared on the internet without permission (just like on dating websites!)…where as Tinder, a dating app has little to no privacy settings at all. This app is used by teenagers, to mature adults. This app is based on a ‘swiping’ system, where users either swipe left, or right to match with others. This app is extremely biased, as we base our swiping actions on one public profile image – it is all about ‘looks’. This can be confronting and daunting for some users, as finding a ‘match’ is not all about looks, right? What about all the deeper stuff like interests, or hobbies? This app also lacks privacy settings, as the user has to display which city they are from, in order to gain people closest to there area (or 100km away, chosen by you).

In discussing the different dating websites, and apps available, everyone has different preferences on which platforms to use. It is ultimately up to the user to decide which works best for them, what private information they decide to post, and which website/app they feel safest on.
