Social Activism: #UntilWeAllBelong

Social Activism must be circulated in today’s digital media society.

So what is social activism? We can view this as a group or organisation, which focuses on social or political issues through different mediums, to bring about change.
Politics, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are just a few ongoing areas which are in need of social activism.

One which frustrates, and upsets a wealth of people in today’s society, is marriage equality. A social movement which caught my attention recently called Until We All Belong, is a movement about equal rights and marriage equality. As described on the Until We All Belong website, ‘…our mission is to make everyone feel welcome and accepted no matter who you are. It’s this focus that has brought our attention to the LGBTQI community and the support needed for marriage equality in Australia. We see marriage as a fundamental part of belonging and, while we know Australians accept marriage equality, we are determined to help empower change to ensure all Australians have the right to marry the person they love.’

This movement is creating awareness through different digital media platforms; Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and websites, just to name a few. An acceptance ring is also available to purchase, to make others aware about ‘closing the gap’. This ring is described as ‘broken’ as it is not a fully enclosed ring, representing the gap in which marriage equality is facing.

As emotionally viewed within the short video describing the ring-

‘…the piece that’s missing, is acceptance’

We should be embracing the equal right to marry- not resenting, opposing, or discriminating against it. We all have our own cultures, characteristics, and beliefs.
So why not let individuals choose for themselves who they love, and who they want to marry- is it not their human right?

We need to eradicate traditional discrimination, and respect social change.
Who wants to live in a society filled with hate and inequality? We have the technological advances for our voices to be heard — so let’s use it to our full extent. With the use of hashtags, social media, websites, online imagery and emotional impact videos, we can communicate and target our online audience through various digital media channels. The hashtag used in this movement #UntilWeAllBelong allows others to share their stories, and be involved within this movement. Using digital media, creates an online platform for activists to speak out, and lets them reach a large number of audiences wold wide. This also generates others to become apart of the group movement on social media, creating an online community.
